During the twenty-first century, activity will increasingly take place in self-organizing, system shifting networks. This site offers resources and discussion space for those who want to better understand network approaches to transformation and improve their skills in facilitating this transition.

This is also the site for the Network Weaver Consultants Network, a loosely affiliated group of consultants who provide a wide range of network services for organizations, networks and communities.

Sadia Hassan is a facilitator and network weaver who has enjoyed helping organizations use a human-centered design approach to think through inclusive, equitable, and participatory processes for capacity building. She is especially adept at facilitating conversations around race, power, and sexual violence using storytelling practice as a means of community engagement and strategy building. She is an MFA candidate in Poetry at the University of Mississippi and has a Bachelor’s degree in African/African-American Studies from Dartmouth College.

Jane Wei-Skillern

Jane Wei-Skillern is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Social Sector Leadership at the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. Previously, she has served on the faculty at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Harvard Business School (HBS), and London Business School. She has studied and published extensively on nonprofit networks for more than two decades.  She is the author and coauthor of dozens of HBS and Haas UC Berkeley case studies, book chapters, and journal articles and is the lead author of the casebook, Entrepreneurship in the Social Sector (Sage Publications, 2007). 

 A distillation of her work can be found at New Network Leader. Her research has focused most prominently on network leadership. This research examines how nonprofit leaders that focus less on building their own institutions and instead invest to build strategic networks beyond their organizational boundaries can achieve dramatic gains in mission impact with the same or fewer resources.

MaryAnn Martinez

MaryAnn Martinez is a non-profit director and interdisciplinary food systems scholar, currently a PhD candidate at Antioch Graduate School of Leadership and Change. MaryAnn’s current academic research is focused on an emergent hunger prevention network during Covid-19. In addition, MaryAnn also brings years of expertise as a consultant for non-profit and local government around childhood nutrition, substance abuse prevention, and other social issues, as well as practical experience as a vegetable and livestock farmer, in both for-profit and social enterprises.

MaryAnn’s primary consultation focus is on network and social system mapping of people, communities and ideas to ignite discussion around issues of local and regional food systems, food insecurity, food justice and equity.

When MaryAnn is not engaged in growing food and networks she can usually be found running in the woods, playing scrabble, or hanging out with family, friends, and pets.

Kimberley Jutze is the founder of Shifting Patterns Consulting, a Certified B Corporation that helps changemaker leaders get their colleagues on the same page and put collaborative processes in place to achieve greater impact.  Her company applies organizational and human systems processes that enable organizations collaborating at the intersection of social, economic, and environmental justice solve problems that prevent people from working well together in ways that stay solved.  This involves pinpointing the underlying causes of poor performance and unhealthy conflict, building the commitment to take effective action, supporting people in coming up with their own solutions, and putting a support system in place to monitor improved performance.

Sahana Chattopadhyay is a global Speaker, Writer, Master Facilitator, Organization Development Consultant, and Coach. I am a systemic change agent and a process artist.  Since March 2009, when I began leading a local weekly “Discussion Salon,” I have been convening and hosting both in-person and virtual conversations on a regular basis, in service to initiatives for change.

I specialize in making virtual events come alive, either as stand-alone engagements or in conjunction with in-person gatherings. I have extensive experience adapting large group conversational processes such as World Cafe, Open Space Technology and Appreciative Inquiry to the virtual realm, as well as integrating in-person and virtual formats within a single conversation, gathering or engagement.  I use these processes to support collaboration, build communities of practice and purpose, and to host large scale conversations in service to the work being done across multiple dimensions of global systemic transformation.

Through the Thriving Resilient Communities Collaboratory, which I have co-stewarded since 2013, I support a network of (mostly US-based) organizations and their leaders doing work on community-scale and (bio)regionally coordinated whole systems transformation.  We see this as a key leverage point for addressing global challenges around economic, social, and environmental systems, issues of justice and equity, and the enormous need for the regeneration of our communities and the biosphere.

I also convene the twice-annual Now What?! gathering: an s a twice-yearly global gathering of people and resources for collectively navigating the complexity of our times in order to co-create learning and support Life.  It takes the form of interconnected sets of small group “deep dive” conversations taking place in person and virtually, along with a “pop-up gift economy” to support weaving and other work in service to systemic transformation.

Ammie Kae, co-founder of Fluff, a digital marketing startup, is a licensed Social Worker and Clinical Therapist in the Chicagoland area. She currently sees clients both one-on-one and in group settings for therapy, and works as a Lead Designer and Brand Strategist: digitally growing small businesses. Additionally, Ammie Kae is certified at the Masters level in Nonprofit Administration.

She has worked with organizations, such as Goodwill and the Department of Education’s Title IX Office to write curriculum, implement and evaluate programming, as well as complete data analysis to make applicable recommendations for the future. 

 She focuses primarily on programs that empower Black and Brown communities and individuals. Specifically those experiencing racial discrimination, sexual violence, food or housing insecurity, and disparities in formative education.

Dolores Chandler (they/them) is a radical community based social worker with over 10 years of experience as a facilitator, trainer, performer, writer, and angelic trouble maker. They entered into this work through drag kinging and gender performance which led them to community organizing. Dolores approaches their work through a violence prevention lens, as well as a racial and gender justice lens.

Professionally, they have worked in sexual violence prevention education and supporting LGBTQ and POC youth leadership development. Dolores works with organizations to achieve their missions by centering racial and gender equity and building compassionate community. Their services include equity coaching, facilitation, and training with a focus on analyzing power dynamics and dismantling white supremacy culture in groups and organizations.

Tamara Shapiro

Tamara Shapiro was a lead strategist and facilitator of the InterOccupy network which facilitated democratic, interactive conference calls that led to regional and national actions, conferences and multi-city events.  She was one of the lead coordinators of Occupy Sandy, the most effective citizen-led relief effort in U.S. history.  

She then went on to create and implement a networked hub structure for The People’s Climate March, which has been using the model since 2014, and co-founded Movement Netlab, a practice-centered ‘think-make-and-do tank’ that helped develop powerful conceptual and practical tools that help facilitate the growth and effectiveness of the most dynamic, emerging social movement networks of our time, as well as non profits and philanthropic organizations hoping to transition into a networked model using racial equity and network models.  She is currently a network trainer, consultant and coach, as well as the Program Director at the NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives.

Katy’s practice focuses primarily on network and social system mapping, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and systems-informed strategy as key avenues for transformative systems change that strengthens social justice and ecological health. As a facilitator, systems thinker, and content expert in the fields of water, food and farming, and climate change, Katy supports leaders, organizations, and collaboratives in navigating complexity to develop adaptive strategies that address the root causes of social and environmental problems.

Katy is a Fellow of the Academy for Systems Change, Senior Partner at Ag Innovations, and volunteers on several projects advancing healthy, just, and regenerative food systems. Dr. Lisa Trocchia is Associate Faculty in the Sustainable Food Systems graduate program at Prescott College. She is also a network facilitator and consultant offering support in network communication and design, self-organizing, horizontal leadership, and visual storytelling. Lisa holds an interdisciplinary PhD in the Social Ecology of Food. She explores food-based social ecosystems from multiple perspectives, including Communication Studies, Sociology, Political Theory, and the study of networks and complex adaptive systems. Dr. Trocchia is a sensory ethnographer. She researches and writes about the performance of cultural foodways, food and the transmission of affect, and she examines the social ecologies of community-based food systems as sites of participatory and transformative change.

For more than a decade I have contributed to the development, design and delivery of the Human Venture Institute and Human Venture Leadership programs (formerly Leadership Calgary). My contributions to this community have deeply impacted my approach to work and life.

Current and past community contributions include: Board Member of the Human Venture Institute (current), Board Member of Bolivia Kids (current); Board Member of Wildwood Playschool (current) past chair of the Leadership Calgary Program Committee and a past Board Member for Volunteer Calgary (now Propellus). In 2008, I was fortunate to be named to Calgary’s ‘Top 40 Under 40’. I hold a BComm in Finance and International Development from the University of Alberta, have studied Journalism at Carleton University, Design Marketing at Parsons in New York City and worked as a Page for the Canadian House of Commons.

I live on Treaty 7 lands, the traditional territory of the Nitsatapi, Tsuu T’ina and Stoney Nakoda Nations, and part of Metis Region 3 with my husband and my two children.

Denisha Craig is a child sex abuse prevention advocate and an Independent Consultant for Resonance Network and Leadership Learning Community (LLC’s) WEB network. Based in Maryland, Denisha  supports networks organizing around similar causes move through key processes to achieve their goals. Her work includes weaving together individuals, strategic planning, facilitation design, with high levels of interaction and participation, network thinking, and leadership skills.

Denisha has a healthy goal to use hashtag activism (ex. #metoo #blacklivesmatter) to normalize the discussion around preventing child sex abuse in every home. As founder of Paranoia to Prevention (#paranoiatoprevention) Denisha raises awareness on adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s).

Purvi Shah inspires changes as a consultant on gender, racial, and economic equity. As an anti-violence advocate, trainer, grassroots researcher, and facilitator committed to opening space for transformation, she delights in movement-making, strategic action for change, and furthering equity in community.

While serving as Executive Director of Sakhi for South Asian Women, a community-based anti-violence agency, she witnessed the profound impact of systems on immigrant survivors of violence. The disparity in access to justice for survivors led her to spearhead coalition-building towards local and national systems change on language access in the courts. This effort led to a new court rule on access to interpreters and a State workplan for language access. In 2008, she won the inaugural SONY South Asian Excellence Award for Social Service for her leadership fighting gender violence.

In her work, Saida has organized statewide advocacy initiatives promoting the rights of LGBTQ youth in foster care, education and juvenile justice, and directed art actions uplifting the visibility of Black girls, women and queer folks.

Danielle M. Varda, PhD is the CEO of Visible Network Labs and an Associate Professor at the University of CO Denver in the School of Public Affairs. Dr. Varda directs VNL’s data science company that hosts the Aspen platform, including apps and web based tools to track the progress of network interventions and the largest database of cross-sector inter-organizational networks.

These include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded PARTNER tool, a social network analysis survey and analysis tool and the Person-Centered Network (PCN App), a tool to assess the strengths and gaps in a person’s personal support networks. She is also the director of theNetwork Leadership Training Academy, a three day workshop for network leaders to increase skills to build, manage, and evaluate effective networks. She has consulted with over 100 organizations on network leadership, and has evaluated dozens of cross-sector community networks.

Lisa Watson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Openly, an impact strategy and research company committed to social good. Lisa is a social impact strategist with 20 years of experience designing, weaving and evaluating networks in the nonprofit, philanthropic and government sectors. For 15 years, she held senior positions in the Ontario provincial government and United Way Toronto & York Region.

As a consultant and coach, her core areas of contribution include strategy, learning, leadership and organizational development. Lisa shares her passion for the power of networks as a faculty member with the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and through her work with organizations and networks across the country.

Sarah Ann Shanahan has worked for the RE-AMP Network for ten years. She currently serves as the Network’s Community Manager where she facilitates the collaboration of members through connections, collective strategy setting, and capacity building.
 
Her primary skills are in facilitation and meeting planning but has also been leading the work to develop and use a social systems map for the RE-AMP Network. She’s an Associate of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute and co-developed a Systems Thinking Academy Curriculum for the Network drawing from the Institute, previous RE-AMP System Thinking Academies and Fasterthan20.

I grew up in the tallgrass prairies of Illinois, USA, where the lanky sandhill cranes pause on their way to and from Mexico.  Retracing one of my family’s roots, I’ve recently moved south to Mexico City to do what I do as a mixed heritage person: build bridges.  

One facet of my work as building bridges between extractive capitalism/colonialism and a society that repairs and regenerates from these traumas.  The other part of my work is building bridges that support movement networks on the path toward a more just society.

Right now, this looks like facilitating peer learning among climate justice organizations in the United States, mapping interconnections between citizen-generated data initiatives around the world, and developing behaviors for large-scale network health to end violence against women.  My specialties are at the intersections of network strategy, social network analysis, technology, and communication cultures.

Yonis supports groups in the creative re-imagining of how to do justice work in more just ways. After almost a decade in the aerospace sector working as COO and systems engineer, he quit his job and started a journey of personal transformation that initiated with a permaculture design course. My work with networks comes out of my experiences as a classroom teacher and working inside large educational bureaucracies. I believe that the power of networks comes from the idea that we are all leaders and everyone is a peer.

Deitre Epps is the CEO and Founder of RACE for Equity, LLC.

Deitre has worked for over twenty years to address the ill effects of poverty on low income communities. She provided direct services to Baltimore City’s children and their families for over a decade as an educator and program director for infants to 8th grade students and as a professor at Baltimore City Community College. She also taught early childhood education courses at Towson State University. June Holley

June has been weaving networks, helping others weave networks and writing about networks for over 40 years. She is currently increasing her capacity to capture learning and innovations from the field and sharing what she discovers through blog posts, occasional virtual sessions and a forthcoming book.  Topics she will be focusing on in the coming year include:

  • a communications system where weavers can support each other and share information
  • a place to share what people are learning from their practice,
  • a set of resources drawn from emergent practice,
  • a set of practices to address inequities and
  • a social media strategy to draw more people around the globe into the network weaving network.

Her Practice

In 1981 June discovered complexity science and became intrigued with the process of transformation. How could communities change in ways that would make them good places for everyone? 

For the next two decades, she worked with others in Appalachian Ohio to catalyze cascades of network experimentation, observing and documenting the dynamics that enabled many hundreds of people to start and then expand businesses in rural Appalachia. With these newly minted entrepreneurs, she mobilized dozens of area organizations to collaborate, self-organize and create an environment that would help these businesses innovate, expand and work together to create an effective support system for networked entrepreneurs.

After twenty years as executive director of the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (ACEnet), she stepped down to devote her energies to helping communities around the globe form system shifting, self-organizing networks by training and supporting network weavers and helping new networks form.

The hundred or so network projects she has advised range from local networks to international ones; included networks focused on a specific sector such as food access or health access as well as cross sector initiatives such network leadership networks; reached from small rural networks with a few dozen participants to massive networks with thousands of international participants including the networkweavers network. All recent projects have had a strong equity focus and a commitment to dismantling racism and hierarchy.  June has led hundreds of interactive workshops – many of them virtual – on applying a network approach and authored the Network Weaver Handbook and over 20 blog posts.

Network Support Systems

In the last few years,  June has shifted her energies to co-creating the support ecosystem needed so that millions of people around the world have access to network and self-organizing strategies and can use them to rapidly transform systems. This support ecosystem includes: 

  • a communications system where weavers can support each other and share information
  • a place to share what people are learning from their practice,
  • a set of resources drawn from emergent practice,
  • a set of practices to address inequities and
  • a social media strategy to draw more people around the globe into the network weaving network.

The site www.networkweaver.com and a set of related activities became the focus for these efforts.  The site includes a space for 51 network weaving consultants to present their skills and offerings to the world; this group is also supported through a monthly community of practice. Since dismantling racism is a key tenet of network weaving, proactive outreach to consultants of color was undertaken and an equity fund set up to compensate BIPOC authors for blog posts and resource development.

The networkweaver blog is now a place for the latest network thinking and practice to be shared. Over 78 contributors have written pieces for the blog. 

The final section of the site is the resources section where 49 handouts, worksheets, powerpoints, modules and books are offered, most free of charge, on every aspect of network formation and practice. Although many of these resources are derived from June’s many years of practice, they are increasingly coming from practitioners in the field.

The Network Weaving Facebook group of 2400 people is a place for weavers to share information and get support for challenges. 

Blog posts, consultant offerings, events  and resources are shared through an enewsletter and a social media system reaching a over 18,000 people (and expanding by about 300 people each month) through Twitter, LinkedIn, scoop.it, Facebook and medium.  

Current and Future Directions: Network Weaving Institute

In the four decades that June has been supporting networks, they have shifted from being a fringe phenomenon to being the favored way of responding to our complex world. But networks come in all shapes and sizes and we still have only rough guidance in knowing which kinds of networks are best for different situations and how they can be most effectively structured.

During the coming decade, June is stepping back from major consulting projects to focus on taking all that she and others have learned about networks with transformative capacity and writing a series of articles (which may well morph into a book or set of videos). This will be done collaboratively as much as possible – sharing her writings in google docs open to commenting and/or joint editing. 

June will also continue to develop materials and modules that can be used by individuals or networks to deepen their understanding of networks.

In addition to writing June will identify a few high leverage cross network efforts (connecting more environmental networks to networks promoting equity and the need to dismantle racism and hierarchy, for example, or helping national networks provide more support to local self-organizing efforts) and will provide opportunities to explore network potentials at no cost.
