What it means to ‘do’ Systems Thinking: Lessons for Working With and Within Systems

Systems thinking and complexity-based approaches are ever-increasing in their prominence in professional practice. Every other day there are policies, programs, or responses that ‘use systems thinking’, are ‘systems informed’, or ‘systems aware’ – but what does it mean to be incorporating a systems view in to our work?

Over the past five years, more and more of my work has turned to systems thinking and systems methods, applied across a wide range of contexts. Sometimes that has meant working with a system to understand it, and sometimes working within one to change how an organisation or context operates. This session is a chance for me to press pause and put together the lessons and advice that I’ve taken from this work.

The session will cover:

Lessons from introducing systems thinking as a response to complex problems – ranging from organisational through to project-levels
Methods and activities ranging from those that ‘make maps’, through to those that are more abstract and challenge ways of thinking
Where to start if you are wanting to adopt or introduce systems thinking into your context or practice.
There will also be plenty of space for Q&A – when you register you can send through questions you’re wrestling with which will inform the content, plus whatever else comes up on the day itself!
