LaToya Wesley-Colm, PhD (she/her) is a dedicated social justice advocate, researcher, and nonprofit leader with over 20 years of experience. As the Resource Mobilization Director at Resonance Network, she secures resources and builds partnerships to support a network of new and experienced movement leaders and organizers working for transformative change. LaToya also serves as the Executive Director of Moss Justice Partners, a D.C.-based nonprofit that works to identify and fill critical service gaps for justice-impacted individuals and their loved ones through partnerships and inventive solutions.

LaToya’s work is rooted in the belief that real change happens when we center the voices of those most impacted by injustice. She’s committed to creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity, purpose, and agency.

Based in the D.C. metro area, LaToya recharges by making candles and creating ceramic art—a meditative practice she enjoys when she’s not busy with her family.

1) What inspired you to write this piece?

This piece came from a deep belief in the power of community and collective action to drive real change. At Resonance Network, we’re more than just a group of advocates—we’re a network of people working together toward a vision of a better world. Writing this was my way of sharing that vision and inviting others to join us in it. Resonance Network focuses on leadership development and creating spaces where new and seasoned organizers and movement leaders can practice, learn, and grow together. I wanted to highlight how, when we come together and support each other’s stories, we’re stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to challenge unjust systems. It’s a way of saying: you’re not alone in this, and together, we can build something powerful.

2) What does liberation mean to you?

For me, liberation means creating a world where everyone has the freedom, safety, and resources to live fully and thrive without fear of discrimination or oppression. It’s about dismantling the systems that limit our potential and devalue certain lives, while building new structures that value justice, equity, and dignity for all. Liberation isn’t just an end goal; it’s a continuous process that involves healing, reclaiming our stories, and reimagining what’s possible when communities come together with shared purpose and commitment. Ultimately, it means creating a society where everyone’s humanity is honored and where every person has the opportunity to lead a life of joy, agency, and respect.
