Despite all our efforts to be centered, resilient, and joyful, the drumbeat of shocks, disasters, and toxic emotions can wear away at our souls. Over the past year, we have witnessed democracy and human rights crumble. We have grappled with existential questions about the nature of humanity and the possibility of justice for all, while also bearing real loss —personally and professionally — no matter how defensive or protective our stance may be. As we react and adapt, it can be easy to lose what grounds us.
However, this is the moment to dig deep into whatever will resource us individually and collectively. By remembering ancestors who have resisted, allowing ourselves rest, strategizing, tending to well-being, crying and laughing, finding community, and expressing solidarity, we embrace methods of collective resistance and liberation.
As the Aurora Commons team, we are continually thinking through the idea of collective liberation. To better define a human and more-than-human liberation for us all, we asked what does liberation look and feel like on a multi-sensory scale? We waded through our feelings of collective grief and helplessness to redefine our desires and imaginations of liberation. Over the last six months, we brought together our individual narratives of liberation to create a collective zine, making clear those desires, objectives, and definitions for freedom.
We are excited to share the Aurora Commons Liberation Zine with you in hopes that these collective writings will help you unlock your own commitments for a communal and interconnected liberation.
