While we may wish to be well all the time, there are times when despair, burnout, or hopelessness arise and even overwhelm us. In these times, how we engage with others, care for ourselves, and embrace the learning and insights that these “down” times offer may be powerful determinants of well-being. In this session, Ana Lucía Castaño Galvis and Paz Bascunan of Arare, will guide us through a reflection of how not being well can be a powerful source of learning about what we really need to be truly well, individually and collectively.
In the words of Ana Lucía and Paz:
“Well-being is relational. It’s an emergent, interdependent outcome of the relationships we have at different levels of systems: from the individual to the communal to the socioecological. As a relational phenomenon, it depends on cultural narratives and social constructs that influence what we consider important or necessary to be well in this world. It is not free from preconceived notions of happiness or wellness, of what success looks like for systems change practitioners, and of what it takes for a person or an organization to create conditions for well-being (both within and outside their immediate sphere of influence). Some of those cultural narratives live inside us and go unchecked, silently informing our decisions, our perceptions of self and others, and ultimately our ways of tending to our well-being.
So what happens when we experience ‘ill-being’? What does this opposite state of well-being mean for us? What might it tell us about our relationships, our environment, and our narratives? In this session, we delve into the intricate space between well-being and ill-being, exploring how these states are often interconnected and how they might manifest in different levels of nested systems. We’ll discuss the nuances of recognizing when one transitions into the other, examining how stressors and challenges impact ourselves and our systems change work in demanding environments.”
By the end of the webinar participants will:
- Gain practical insights on how to emerge from a place of ill-being, despair, burnout, or hopelessness with wisdom and resilience that help us handle the complexities of systems change in a nurturing way
- Learn how to be present for oneself and others during our journey towards thriving.
- Deconstruct the narratives about well-being in the changemaking field to identify how those narratives affect our perceptions and how we show up in our lives
- Identify elements that get lost, overlooked, or sacrificed in the pursuit of well-being, and how to care for them in a holistic and nested way
- Explore practical strategies and approaches that promote collective wellness, emphasizing the importance of inclusive practices that consider diverse needs and perspectives within a group, team, or community

Colectivo Ahuejote, is a civil society organization based in Mexico City working in the Chinampas area which is a 1200+ year old managed ecosystem of artificial islands, created since Aztec times to provide abundant food, flowers and other produce, as well as freshwater for the Valley of Mexico. Colectivo Ahuejote nurtures this territory in partnership with local producers (chinamperos) in the conservation and disseminations of this place’s biocultural heritage, weaving this heritage with agroecology-based techniques, processes and tools to promote a fairer and more sustainable agri-food system for the City.

I’m a Colombian anthropologist and agroecologist with comprehensive education in transdisciplinary projects, regenerative thinking and community development. My purpose is to help us transition to ways of life that generate universal wellbeing, and nurture people and places’ capacity to grow and preserve life. To this end, I co-founded Arare Co., an organization that fosters regenerative development of primary production systems in Colombia and Mexico. I’m also a professional facilitator specialized in territorial development, education, and primary sector sustainability, with special experience in working with rural communities and ethnic groups. I apply ecological design models, participatory tools, and liberating structures to catalyze collective intelligence. With 10+ years of experience, I’ve co-created and implemented hundreds of participatory design and management processes for social, productive and educational projects. Covering multiple sectors, I’ve designed and facilitated social learning experiences and collaborative creation processes with diverse groups of stakeholders: farmers, afrocolombians, indigenous peoples, peasant and civil society organizations, public institutions, academic and learning communities, teenagers, research and socioenvironmental impact networks, and green businesses.

I’ve been a fan of social changemakers ever since I realized they existed over 12 years ago. I have worked with them, for them and as one of them ever since, dedicating the past decade to reconcile my passion that emerges from working in the social innovation and the entrepreneurial sector, with my passion for wellbeing and life balance. I have a Green MBA, but I am also a yoga instructor and a vipassana meditation practitioner.
